When Marc Whitmore left Deloitte after 30-plus years as a senior partner, he didn't go looking for a tech startup or a franchise. He went looking for something real - something he could build, grow, and leave behind.

What he found was Dennis' Horseradish.

A 65-year-old Canadian brand. Dormant for over a year. Listed on MLS.ca like a piece of real estate. No active customers, aging equipment, and a product category so niche that Marc is now the only horseradish producer left in Canada.

Three years in, Dennis' is in over 1,000 stores, operating in four countries, and growing 25% year over year.

Marc's story is not a typical food innovation narrative. There's no lab-grown protein. No functional beverage. No algorithm. Just a man who saw a neglected piece of Canadian food heritage and decided it was worth saving - and scaling.

But his journey raises questions that sit at the heart of what CFIN works on every day:

**Who is building Canadian food businesses - and why does it matter?**

Marc's answer is personal and practical. He wanted to model entrepreneurship for his kids. He wanted to create jobs. He wanted to contribute to the tax base that funds the hospitals, the infrastructure, the social fabric Canadians depend on. He sees food entrepreneurship not as a lifestyle choice but as an act of nation-building.

**What does it actually take to revive a dormant Canadian brand?**

Dennis' didn't come with a customer list - it came with a list of people who _used to_ buy. Marc had to rebuild distribution relationships from zero, re-establish retailer trust, and find new markets while simultaneously getting the product back into production. The innovation wasn't in the recipe. It was in the execution.

**What happens when there's no competition to learn from?**

Operating as Canada's only horseradish producer means no benchmarks, no industry peers to compare notes with, and no established trade lane to follow into export markets. Marc has had to figure it out - and in doing so, he's created a playbook that didn't exist before.

We sat down with Marc on This Commerce Life to hear the full story - from the failed Great Canadian Hops Company that came first, to the MLS listing that changed everything, to what 1,000-store distribution actually looks like when you're starting from nothing.

It's a conversation worth having - not just because the story is compelling, but because it reflects something true about Canadian food entrepreneurship that doesn't always get enough attention: the businesses quietly doing the work, in categories nobody else wants, building something durable.

Phil,

Hope you are well !

I think you need to revise your statement about Denis Horseradish being the ONLY one left in Canada doing horseradish.

There are a few others also across Canada doing horseradish , two in Ontario one in BC and one in Quebec. We have provided some of the equipment for their lines !! (I have provided Mark Whitmore some info a few weeks ago).

Needs to be corrected.

Have a great week,

Regards,

Don.
