Scale-Up Series (Part 2): What to Prove in Pilot

Scale-Up - Part 2: Pilot

In step one of scale-up-the lab-the goal is to have a defined, reproducible process. That starting point enables the next leap: the pilot stage.

Here, the process moves from grams to kilograms, which lets you:

  1. Validate reproducibility outside the lab,

  2. identify bottlenecks and critical points,

  3. tune key parameters under conditions closer to industry,

  4. evaluate direct and indirect costs-estimating profitability and refining the process to stay competitive,

  5. observe equipment behavior and anticipate design requirements,

  6. involve the people and resources that will run the process at larger scales, and

  7. most importantly, never lose sight of safety and quality. From this phase onward, plan how you'll ensure the product meets the market's required standards.

The pilot stage isn't just about increasing volume-it's a space for learning and adaptation, where you understand the process from new angles: technical, economic, and regulatory.

Ultimately, this step determines whether the project has a solid foundation to move toward industrial scale and truly compete in the market.
