The food inflationary wars continue to disrupt consumers grocery shopping habits, and Canada's grocery sector. For the 52-week period ending September 2025, unit tonnage volume increased a mere 1%, yet did not keep pace with population growth. Two more disturbing trends:
- 61% of Canadians lack confidence in affording groceries 6-months from now.
- For the 52-week period ending August 2025, 41% of FMCG categories have experienced unit volume declines.
The lone bright spot:
- Small business continues to be the key driver for sales growth: +5.3% vs 3.8% overall.
