Hello CFIN Community,

@Jairo Melo and his team are working on a big upgrade to the YODL Resource Finder. One of the many improvements they are working on is the creation of a comprehensive, cross country list of co-packers and co-manufacturers working in Canada.

If your company provides that kind of service, please post below and tell us the name of your company, your capabilities and minimum and maximum volume thresholds.

Likewise, if you are someone who has a good co-packer list and would consider licensing it to us, we want to hear from you as well.

Dana & Jairo, thank you for this. Such an important resource for the Canadian food industry, and for innovation in general. Many start-ups may not have the manufacturing capabilities, but they have a great idea and product. It's great we can collaborate to help bring new products to Canadian consumers.

Hello CFIN Community!

Blendtek Ingredients is a dry mix manufacturer in Cambridge, ON. We primarily do bakery mixes such as cake, pancake and donut mix, mildly spiced savory mixes such as seasonings, dry beverage mixes and specialty premixes to optimize operational efficiencies. We are SFQ, Kosher and Organic certified.

We are also an ingredient distributor so we are experts in sourcing ingredients, and have Product Development capabilities to create your recipe with you.

We package in retail ready preformed pouches from 200g - 1000g as well as in Kraft bags from 10 - 25kg and poly tote bags of 500kg and up.

So true. As someone who used to negotiate co-man contracts from the vender side, I can tell you that we always wanted our clients to be involved because we knew that was the foundation of sustainable, long-term relationships.

Just a note to all that are looking/considering using a co-packer for their manufacturing/packaging.

Please visit the co-packers that you have selected to do your products to make sure they have the proper equipment, follow the CFIA recommendations for producing food products, have all certificates, maybe hire someone to do an inspection of the selected co-packer.

For some of the liquid processors looking, make sure the line equipment is 316 L stainless for any piece touching the product, easily to take apart and clean between batches/products, containers are cleaned prior to filling ( air or water depending) good capping system and good quality labelers and capable of doing your labels.

Same process for powder/granulated products, right VFFS or pre-made pouch system, dust collection system, labeler, etc,,,,,

Not all co-packers are created equal !!

@Don Bowen you are 100% correct! I've seen many brands - even those working with great co-manufacturing partners - not get the most out of their choice by not being hands on.

If I were to engage a co-packer/co-man I'd be there for every run, be involved in inventory control for my ingredients, understand my waste ratios, etc. Nobody will mind your business the way you'll mind your business. Plus, you'll learn a ton by being involved and become a much better food innovator!

Some of the groups/people new to the food industry really don't do any inspection of their selected co-packer even today !

I had a customer who was having his product done by a co-packer that when he visited the plant he noticed that they did not clean the containers prior to filling his product!! He was a little upset and had to ask them to clean the containers prior to filling HIS product or would have to try to find another co-packer !! This still happens today on many product lines. From foreign material like bugs, dirt, dust, it can get into containers wrapped in plastic in shipping cases when being shipped or at the co-packers plants in the warehouse. Cleaning is the only way to insure they are free of any foreign products by cleaning them. Its one of the cheapest parts of a line and the most neglected/omitted , I know this is recommended but not enforced as it should be !

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PRODUCTS IN THEY ARE FOR HUMAN CONSUPMTION !!! NOT THE CO-PACKER !!

You get what you pay for with co-packers and co-manufacturers. Look at what third party certifications they have. In general terms, the more third party audits they have to go through, the greater level of comfort you should have in them. Depending on the type of products they produce for you they should have government certifications like Health Canada, CFIA, USDA or FDA. Other co-mans will get extra certifications like SQF, BRC and NSF. All of these certifications require a high level of GMP principles. These third party audits should give you a higher level of comfort that the co-man values quality (because the co-man is paying to have these certifications), but it is still important to have a relationship with the leadership of the co-man so you develop a level of "trust" with them.
