Hi YODL'ers
We are all probably getting sick of the t-word (tariffs) and the rollercoaster ride that is our current trade relations with the US... but we are just at the beginning of this ride.
No surprise that suddenly Regional Trade Barriers are coming up as a major thing to tackle!

A recent International Monetary Fund study about internal trade barriers in Canada identified that aligning regulations across Canada could increase overall gross domestic product per capita by 4%, an enticing prospect as we look for ways to increase productivity.
Domestic opportunities abound; internal trade in food and beverage manufacturing is up 20% year over year. Internal trade drives almost one third of food and beverage manufacturing sales across Canada, with another half being sold within the business' own province. As a result, the domestic market drives over three quarters of food and beverage manufacturing sales in Canada. As impressive as those gains are, there is room for further expansion of internal trade as remaining barriers are knocked down and regulations are harmonized.
I would love to know what barriers you face in selling outside of your province - whether related to transportation, packaging, regulations, etc! Let's give our federal partners a target list for food!!
Some ones identified to me:
- Provincial vs federal inspection differences in meat plants
- Packaging requirements
- Quota restrictions in supply managed industries
Would love to know what specific red tape is causing you headaches when trying to sell to other provinces.
