Seeking Guidance on Entering the Packaged Food Industry in Ontario

Hello Everyone!

We are a small, family-run business based in Windsor-Essex, Ontario. We specialize in authentic Indian and Bengali cuisine.

We are now exploring opportunities to expand into the packaged food industry and reach customers beyond Windsor-Essex, including Toronto, London, and other parts of Ontario.

As we are new to this side of the food industry, I would really appreciate some guidance on how to get started, particularly with:

  • Food packaging and preservation – Shelf life, freezing, and suitable packaging methods.

  • Food safety and regulatory requirements – CFIA regulations, certifications, and standards for selling packaged food.

  • Lab testing – Nutritional analysis, shelf-life testing, and food safety testing.

  • Labelling requirements – Nutrition Facts tables, ingredients, allergens, and other mandatory information.

  • Logistics and distribution – Cold-chain transportation, frozen food delivery, and cost-effective distribution across Ontario.

  • Scaling production – Moving from a small approved kitchen to larger-scale commercial production.

I would love to connect with anyone who has experience in food manufacturing, packaging, distribution, or navigating the regulatory process in Canada.

We are still a small business, learning and growing, and would be grateful for any recommendations, contacts, resources, or advice from this group.

Thank you

Team Tawrcurry

Hi Suchismita,

Great to see Tawrcurry exploring packaged foods!

I’m Roshan from Nexsure. We help Canadian food businesses navigate food safety, regulatory requirements, shelf-life planning, labelling, and commercialization.

A good starting point would be understanding the products you’re planning to launch and whether you’re considering frozen, refrigerated, or shelf-stable formats. That would help determine the most practical route forward without unnecessary costs.

Happy to connect and share some guidance!
