Thousands of CPG brands launch every year, but many fail.
Why? Because they overlook the financial essentials.
Let me share what I've learned.
Having been part of launches across categories-tea, spices, bottled water, and RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)-I've seen it all.
Some products soared, while others struggled.
The difference? Solid financial planning and realistic expectations.
Here's what I've distilled from those experiences :
1️⃣ Break-Even Point
Break-even is when your sales cover your costs.
Use this formula: Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price - Variable Costs).
That "selling price - variable costs" is your Contributory Margin-what's left to cover fixed expenses.
Aim to break even within 18-24 months.
For capital-heavy projects, calculate the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) -
Make sure it's 3-5% higher than your Weighted Average Cost of Capital (blended cost of debt and equity).
2️⃣ Gross Margins
Profit after making the product (sales - costs) should hit 50%.
Even if margins start low, have a plan to improve with volume or smarter production.
3️⃣ Listing Fees
Retailers may charge upfront fees for shelf space.
Amortize this over 12-18 months to protect your P&L (after discussing with your Auditor / Accountant).
If that's not possible, treat it as an investment-it's worth it!
4️⃣ Marketing Spends
Divide into:
Non-Working Media: Costs for producing ads (photos, videos).
Working Media: Spending to run those ads.
Focus 70-80% on Working Media for better returns.
And aim for at least 4:1 Return on Ad Spend (ROAS).
5️⃣ EBIT Margins
Your operating profit (after all expenses) is key.
Target a healthy 20% EBIT margin by Year 3.
Map out how to get there-it's your growth roadmap.
Having seen both successes and failures, I can tell you this:
Every successful launch is a mix of creativity and financial discipline.
With these tips, your story can be a winning one! 😊
