Where is fish processing happening in BC?

We at 7 Leagues Leather are looking for information about where fish processing is being done in BC, by whom, how much, etc. Does anyone know where I could find this info?

We are a leather manufacturer that makes fish skins into leather, and are looking around for where to site our fish leather tannery to be close to fish processing. Some areas we are thinking of are Port Alberni, Nanaimo, Steveston. Does anyone know how much processing is happening in these areas? Or anywhere else in BC? Are there any new fish processors setting up? Vancouver is likely too expensive and we want to support coastal communities, but we also have to be reasonably close to ports/transportation, so not too far off into the hinterlands.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Hi Nicole,

Have you talked to Dane Chauvel at Organic Ocean? They were recently looking for upcycling opportunities for their organic fish processing by-product. Happy to make the connection if needed.

Alex

Hi Nicole,

Check out Dock+ in Port Alberni The Dock+ – Food in Focus . They have a number of fish processors in the food hub.

Hi Nicole. You could check with St Jeans Cannery in Nanaimo. They are now First Nations owned, and the largest Salmon processor on the west coast I believe. We have done packaging design and marketing for them in the past. Not sure who to talk to re salmon skin. There are other processors here on Vancouver island (Port Hardy - Hardy Bouys), and there are processing facilities in Gold River and Campbell River for Farmed Salmon. (I think their product is sold as full fish though?)
